PMS Bites

Throughout the past few years I've found out I have some nutty hormones (the experts' words), and one of their nuttiest escapades happens once a month, right around that time of the month, when I have to eat all the things. It's hardly an exaggeration (and I'm not alone). Nothing is safe — sweet, bitter, salty, sour — you're especially at risk if you're a bag of chips or high in high fructose corn syrup.

I've gotten to know these hormones well, and we know what each other need (breathe, cry, sleep, my weight in white chocolate chips), but cravings are the hardest to overcome. And PMS has a stigma, you know (the stigma that's questioning why this post even exists)? Or, frustratingly, it's not taken seriously.

Enter PMS Bites.

Tania Green of PMS Bites says, "Symptoms of PMS increase stress and physical discomfort. We grab for comfort food, especially sweets, to cope. Food high in processed sugar and carbohydrates cause a spike in blood sugar and adrenaline levels, which then interfere with hormone balance. The result: more stress, pain and irritability."

Green has created 60-calorie blends of cacao, dandelion root, Siberian ginseng and chamomile that she says take the "bite out of PMS." There are three gluten-free, all-natural, vegan flavors: Plain Crazy, Coco-Nutty and All Kinds of Nuts. All three are delicious without added sugar and calories. My favorite is the Coco-Nutty (of course).

Boy, girl, PMS-er or not, check out Green's video. Aside from her bravo baking skills and beautiful packaging, I love that she's bringing women's issues like PMS forward so we can talk about them openly. I also admire her for following her passion and starting on this adventure.

"One New Year's Eve I set a resolution: record how each of my days went for three years," she said. "It was a simple exercise to help me be more mindful, present and reflective, and it led me to my passion.

"I discovered a consistent trend in my life: most of my bad days were around my PMS time. When I realized that up to 122 days out of my year might be bad, I went to work."

Check out Green's site, donate to her Kickstarter or get in touch for some bites (or better yet, a subscription to monthly deliveries).
