Letterpress Date!

Saturday, July 5, 2014

A few Sundays ago Brian and I had an afternoon date at Tandem Felix Letterpress in Pilsen. We thought we'd enjoy doing something new together, like learn how to work their letterpress and print our own posters, and it was the best time. I wasn't very familiar with letterpress before this, so I wasn't aware of how much goes into each print. A whole lot of love and care!

The studio owners, Liz and Jamiel, are the coolest kids in town. They made the whole process so fun and exciting from start to finish. We talked designs, picked colors, learned how to use their different presses.

There are a variety of things you can make on a date in the studio, but we chose to make posters with this quote by Hafez. Others have made coasters, cards and stationary. Some couples come to the studio and make their own wedding invitations! How cool is that? Liz and Jamiel have every typeface, size and symbol you could imagine. The options are endless.

The perfectionist in me made it take a while to pick the perfect quote and design, but once we decided what we wanted, Liz made it come to life. She drew it out for us and made a few tweaks, then it was up to us to find the letters and lay it all out.

Once everything was laid out perfectly (this process took a long time and Brian was much better at it than me, so I wandered around and took some photos), we locked the design into place.

Then it was printing time, our favorite part! We printed a few posters with gold ink and a few with black. I rolled out the ink, Brian printed them. We ended up with more than 10 perfect posters.

While we waited for the posters to dry we cleaned the studio and checked out Liz and Jamiel's latest projects. I think we overstayed our welcome — we were just having so much fun! I'm hoping to go back and make some holiday cards this winter. We haven't framed our posters yet, but every time I walk past them in the kitchen I get so happy and proud. Letterpress is no joke, guys!

P.S. Remember our leather work date?
