Marmite vs. Vegemite

Saturday, February 8, 2014

Growing up in England, Marmite was like peanut butter. It was the go-to sandwich for school lunches, and I was shocked when I moved here that not only did kids not eat it, they were grossed out that I did. But I stayed strong. And when I'm feeling off or down now, I always have the same routine. "Father of the Bride" (the first one, of course) and a Marmite sandwich. Marmite on ciabatta is my favorite.

When my parents went to Australia a few months ago, I asked them to bring me back some Vegemite. I figured it would be just as delicious. A lot of people know about Vegemite, not Marmite. When I tell them Marmite is my favorite food, they ask if it's the same as Vegemite, and I've always said yes.

Well it's not, folks. Consider this a PSA. It's so, so not. I don't like it one bit. And I know what you're thinking. Ladan, how can two types of yeast extract taste that different? Why are you writing this blog post? I don't have answers, folks. Just raising awareness.
